We intend to transform the perception of prestige in golf substituting these elements, based on the waste of wealth, with new elements based on production, generation of wealth and the efficient use of resources. This redefinition can be understood as an attempt to create new forms of collective perception of territory and a new cultural identity.
In Aledo we identify a social and urban emergency due to the stoppage of works that were transforming the landscape of Murcia in a "fantasy resort". After finishing the earthworks, the former project was frozen, bankrupt. For this reason, our intervention is needed to achieve both economic recovery and the much needed cultural transformation of the place.
We respond to this context by creating a new landscape identity, which is not based on golf, but in energy. To do this we propose a system of solar fields expanding over the south facing hill of Monte Aledo, profiting of the existing earthworks and channeled ducts. The orientation planned for the resort is optimal, and also allows reversal of the visual relationship: the failed housing should have enjoyed magnificent views of the historical city from the sunny hill across the valley, but it will now be the historic city instead, to enjoy a show of light, a fuzzy silhouette, latent and oval, visible from the viewpoints of the ancient city walls.
The power of this action is not only in the aesthetic transformation, but also the cost-effective intervention to fund the very existence of this place, both through energy production and by the new attraction of the historical observation point. The permanence of this art-piece land would be limited in time so as not to impede further development.
In 1978 Rosalind Krauss explained in her article "Sculpture in the Expanded Field" the processes of transformation of artistic production in the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting the works that diluted the border between landscape and architecture, and dissolving the boundaries between artistic practice and cultural activity. The new identity of old Aledo is intimately linked to device that dwells on the opposite hill, difficult to classify, and an expansion of the field that can also generate infinite and volatile horizons.

Golf Productivo: Aledo

OostCampus Park

The construction works of our Park in Oostkamp have started!!
It is a productive park, built with recycled materials. The site: approaching Toledo.

The European Landscape Convention, begins its Article no. 1 with a definition of "Landscape":

an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors.
The perception by people, the existence of someone who observes from a point, is also the key to the classic definition of landscape.
In this proposal we are dealing with a very specific way to perceive a particular landscape: the section of high speed train AVE track that runs along the industrial area of Santa Maria de Benquerencia in its approach to the world heritage city of Toledo. From the windows of the AVE you see a shooting landscape of industrial buildings and their back yards, currently offering poor vision of junk, carelessness and general dereliction, an inadequate anticipation to travellers approaching a rich and well preserved World Heritage Site.
We propose two catalogues of interventions whose common denominator is simplicity. It is a collection of targeted, light interventions, requiring minimal investment.

2. Productive Landscapes.

We do not wish to hide the industrial and economic activity of the Estate. As with the fields and orchards, whose beauty is in the care, precision and attention with which they are worked upon, also the industrial landscape can be beautiful, if treated with the same care, precision and attention.
Proper maintenance, anti-rust paint, careful storage of materials in the work yards, do not only built the beautiful scenery that we seek, but contribute to the economic activity itself, ensuring the durability of equipment, and the effectiveness of management.

3. Artists: Josef Shulz

We want to keep in mind the work of artists who have worked with the image of industrial landscapes, especially the graphic work by artist Josef Schulz, a reference for our interventions. We want to make sure that the reality will be as close as possible to the beauty of the images he created.

4. Two catalogues

Our proposals are collected in two catalogues:
• Catalogue of good practice
• Catalogue of interventions

Catalogue of good practice:
We have videotaped the route of the AVE and then we have analyzed it frame by frame, observing each and every corner.
Some points are close to that beauty which is our reference in the work of Josef Schulz. These points we have endorsed as Good Practice.
On the other hand, other points are far removed from that care, precision and attention we seek, and these have also been identified as Bad Practice.
Then, we proposed how to transform those examples of Bad Practice by applying the criteria of Good Practice.

Catalogue of interventions:
In the second catalogue we propose new interventions, not referenced to existing practices, aiming towards a unified perception of this landscape, emphasizing the higher moments of heroism, with particular attention to the elements related to sustainability, especially Renewable Energy and Water Treatment.

5. Interventions

Pink

All metal elements that are visible from the train shall be painted in a distinctive colour. We propose the fuchsia pink.
This intervention has three major strengths: It relates to the catalogue of best practice by requiring proper maintenance of these elements; it provides an identity to the industrial zone with targeted interventions and limited budget; it reinforces the strobe effect of the AVE, pulsating a succession of splashes of the same colour, which remains on the retina when passing at high speed.

Renewable Energy.

The new Renewable Energy collectors to be implanted shall have an iconic character. They will be placed ensuring its visibility and building a heroic image. As an example, we propose to replicate a photovoltaic solar panel swivel that already exists in the Estate, placing similar panels elsewhere. Naturally, the metallic elements will also respond to the intervention "pink", and the whole may well be subject to the intervention "spotlight"

Inflatables

All commercial signs will be inflatables. This ordinance would be equivalent to those governing signage in historic areas, but instead of forcing an older image (iron forging, scrolls) it requires a light image, mutable and contemporary.

Spotlight

Taking advantage of low-peak hours of consumption of renewable energy, which coincide with trains approaching in dusk and twilight, we propose a light intervention with spotlights, limited in time to the passage of AVE and controlled by presence sensors.
Thus, the iconic elements, especially those related to water purification and renewable energy production, become a visual reference to the passage of the first and last trains of the day.

Productive Landscapes

Following basic criteria for sustainability, we propose new ways to integrate food, goods, water, and energy cycles in our near environment.

We will deal with a Landscape, that is, with the involvement of very different agents whose interests and aims overlap, developing a palimpsest on a page that was never blank.

Tomorrow’s city is not an impenetrable partitioning of activities, inherited from functional town-planning. It is not the sum of lined up elements. Tomorrow’s city, the sustainable city, is a network of interdependence between activities, uses and contexts, all interacting through more or less complex combinations. Natural cycles are included in this network, and in correspondence Nature is not confined, but transformed, inhabited.

Timothy Morton’s seminal book ‘Ecology without Nature’ (2007) compares this evolution with the process of gender equality. Putting something called Nature on a pedestal and admiring it from afar does for the environment what patriarchy does for the figure of Woman: the paradox first described by Simone de Beauvoir deactivates any possible active role of ‘the second sex’ transforming actually existing women into fetish objects.

Ecology is not about Cities looking after Nature, but about City and Nature being the same thing. In this new paradigm, the romantic view of Nature feeding the City and the fetishism of economic exploitation of rural landscape is also substituted by an integrative view of anthropized landscape.

Agriculture
The easiest way to start blurring the border between rural and urban is to develop a local network of agricultural production. On the other hand, locally produced organic vegetables have a potential to provide substantial GHG-savings in transport. The common organic garden also has an important social purpose, being a social meeting place and providing a common project where all people of all ages can participate.

Animal husbandry
Areas for organic agriculture can be programmatically joined with animal husbandry. A revisited pig-city can create a powerful productive landmark.

Wood
The construction of public space around wood production can also be a tool to emphasize the differences between various parts of the urban network, by filling undefined areas with woodlands. Depending on future trends, certain urban areas may be allocated to the woodlands, or vice versa. Thus, the city will have room for expansion and reduction, all within the same organic system.

Fish
Particularly strong proposals for a productive landscape can be centred on fish production, combining productive spaces, public areas, walkways… and restaurants with a view to its own production, which could even become a major tourist attraction. Aquatic life in the semi-natural environment becomes accessible to visitors as the user programme weaves itself into various stages of the production line.

Water
A number of interesting programmatic opportunities may arise from a careful consideration of water cycles. This is closely related with all the former points. Water is a clear example of how the demise of the traditional dichotomy city-nature applies to urban design, emphasizing the need to deal with water purifying plants as an element of urban design, and not merely an infrastructural service. In previous decades the logic was to plan these plants just outside the city; but there is no outside any more.

Energy farming
Production of renewable energy provides a new reading of natural landscape. The force of wind and sun, the flow of water, the heat of the earth, are all now made visible through fields of beautiful devices. We are still learning to appreciate the beauty of white windmills slowly turning their slender giant arms above the horizon, or the vineyard-like extensions of photovoltaic panels over our fields, and some visionaries are already bringing this mesmerizing image into the inhabited landscape of urban parks, or covering proposed buildings with shiny abstract envelopes absorbing the energy required to run the quiet murmur of computers systems.

Visualization
All the above is dealing with energy, water, agriculture, fish, pigs, industry... and the beauty of productive landscapes. The classic definition of landscape involves the presence of an observer, a point of view. This combination of ‘viewing’ plus ‘production’ is one of the main driving forces in all these proposals. This is important, as Sustainability may well be a question of visualization.
An important line of action is to visualize the resources we are using for our daily life, showing in real time the state of management of resources (Solar energy, geothermal, biomass, wasted water…), so that people may be conscious about it. Such info-energy landmark will be a new urban and social reference.

Beauty
It is also essential to tackle the aesthetic challenge of sustainability. Most of the historic architectural languages may be analyzed as a basic response to environment conditions; from the obvious reflexes of water-shedding classical frontispieces, through all the various balances of mass and void showing different achievements in relation to natural light, up to the modern proud statement of indifference to the weather. We have now learned that we cannot be as indifferent to the climate as the modernists claimed, and a new architectural language must be created to incorporate our new concern.

Wealth
The media-attractive sights we propose intend to provoke a triggering effect, to become an example of what can be done so that many others around the world may try equivalent approaches. Some of them explicitly refer to the tourist potential of productive landscape, and the wealth that could be derived not only from its product, but also from its beauty.

Development
The exciting rurban scenes to be developed, provide new patterns for cities to grow as a part of nature, not in opposition to nature. The subtle connection to the environment will prove that natural cycles can be a driving force for architectural and urban design, while the new architectural language is part of a necessary effort to re-evaluate the aesthetics of ecology.
All these efforts to integrate elements of sustainable production as a beautiful and profitable feature to enjoy in everyday life, may well be more proactive against climate change than any technical development or any law. Those are the New Productive Landscapes.

Introduction

A catalogue of strategies to discover, emphasize or build up the cultural value of sustainable productive landscapes.

Sustainable; a network of interdependence between activities, uses and contexts, all interacting through more or less complex combinations to ensure a positive long-term balance. This combination of ‘perception plus ‘production’ is important: Sustainability may well be a question of visualizing production cycles. And beauty. The beauty of productive landscapes.

I. Productive Golf. Strategies to recover the interrupted landscapes left unfinished by bankrupt golf resort developments in Southeast Spain. We focus on ‘splurge’ as the main attractor of Golf (splurging water, land, time). Our target is to substitute this attractor with beautiful production; producing wealth, not wasting it. Client: Gov. of Murcia.

II. Passing trains. Intervention in an industrial estate along the high-speed train line approaching the historic city of Toledo. The commission was a fence to hide it. Instead, we turned it into a beautiful sight for the passengers. Client: Gov. of Castilla La Mancha.

III. Soundscapes. An educational strategy to encourage demand for sound quality in Madrid's commercial street-level floors; a specific proposal to improve soundscape. Client: Madrid City.

IV. OostCampus Park. A productive park, built with recycled materials. Park activities, cycle and pedestrian lanes coexist in harmony with yards for storage and the management of construction material. Golf Productivo
