Productive Golf: Mazarron

Unfinished resorts can be in very different stages of completion. In difficult cases some homes are completed and inhabited, but surrounded by a half-built development or an interrupted building site. In others a large part of the houses may be completed, but facilities are not viable due to the small size of the population; or even the golf course is not there yet.

In the case of Mazarron Country Club the golf course itself was never built. The houses are arranged around a wasteland, a vacuum, which in principle should be the most valuable asset. In fact, the plan shape of golf courses is designed to maximize its perimeter and therefore have the most homes in the forefront. This theoretically green area, the very raison d'être of this place, has become a wasteland full of snakes and scorpions. It is impossible to build the golf course due to lack of water. As we were explained by the engineer who controls the water system, there is only one small reservoir open to strong evaporation, which can only provide water simultaneously to a small percentage of homes during the year. A change in the simultaneity factor could have catastrophic consequences, but then you can use some of the water for other purposes during periods of low occupancy

Greywater recycling
We propose to introduce water recycling systems for grey water from the houses. Water from showers and sinks can be cleaned with biological-mechanical methods without chemicals, obtaining odourless water, not drinkable, but of sufficient quality for use in the toilets of the houses, or for irrigation and crops. The systems, including filtration, treatment with bio-crops, UV lamp sterilizing and storage, are installed in the land would be dedicated to the golf course. The design of the golf courses naturally guarantees the necessary proximity of homes to the tanks. Moreover, we propose that these systems are integrated into elegant white pieces in landscape, combined with a set of stairs, and a walkway.
Fog catchers
The proximity of the coast with humid evening and morning breezes, and the hillside setting of Mazarron Country Club, makes it feasible to introduce a set of fog catchers, to reinforce the water system.
Crops
Both systems allow the introduction of local crops adapted to climate and water scarcity, which provide an productive leisure opportunity for the inhabitants. We combine dryland species such as almonds, with kitchen garden beds, as a productive park.
